Are you hungry? Head to the original AJ Spurs location in Templeton where they serve Chuckwagon-style dining that assures you will leave with a full belly and a smile. For starters, a cast iron pot full of hearty soup, with a side of black beans and salsa, will automatically be brought to your table, followed by a delicious, crisp salad, all of which comes standard with any meal.
If you order an appetizer, be prepared for a lot of food or plan to share with several friends. The Steak Bites appetizer, is a tender 12-ounce top sirloin, cut into bite-size pieces, served with mushrooms and rice pilaf. It is delicious! If you order the Chicken Fingers, you can expect five huge pieces of crispy chicken breast. It’s more than enough for a meal or to share with four friends.
At this point, most will be thinking…my entrée hasn’t come and I’m stuffed.
The barbecue baby back or beef ribs are a favorite entrée and they also serve delicious fish and chicken dinners. At the end of the meal, you also get a huge root beer float or an aperitif.

In 1989, the Templeton location opened using the building that was originally constructed in 1886. The brick walls of the main restaurant and bar are from the original construction. It’s very rustic, with an authentic old-west feel. Numerous antiques and western style decorations fill the restaurant, making guests feel like they are getting a field trip and a history lesson along with a fantastic meal.
General Manager Jerry LeAir shared, “Milt Guggia Enterprises which privately holds AJ Spurs does catering and offers banquet facilities for up to 100 people. Owner Milt Guggia also owns AJ Spurs restaurants in Buellton and Grover Beach. All three central coast locations are famous for enormous portions and really good food.”
AJ Spurs is located at 508 Main Street in Templeton, at the corner of 5th and Main. Hours of operation are 4:30 to 9 p.m. weekdays and 12 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
