Tidepool adventures
Rocky coastal landscapes are the perfect shelter for the tide- pools that are revealed during low tide on just about any beach on the Central Coast. Some beaches are better for tidepools than others. Here are the best lo- cations for tidepool adventures.
San Simeon
The beaches near San Simeon are filled with tidepools bursting with life. Visitors can also ex- plore a variety of nearby natural and historic sites including the elephant seals, Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, San Simeon State Beach and Hearst Castle.
Moonstone Beach in Cambria
Moonstone Beach is ideal
for tidepools. Take the stairs from the boardwalk down to the rocky shore. The tidepools are filled with sea anemones, spiny purple sea urchins, snails, crabs, and sometimes, small fish that become a meal for other tidepool inhabitants.
Montaña de Oro State Park
Located in Los Osos, this park offers 8000 acres of open space, rugged cliffs, secluded beaches, and richly populated tidepools. Spooners Cove is the easiest place to find tidepools. Vast spans of rock are home to barnacles, limpets, snails, and other marine life. There are more tidepools in some of the harder to reach locations of the park.
