     There are few things better than discovering something we en- joy may also be good for us. Wine, and especially red wine, has been studied extensively. Evidence sug- gests that moderate consumption may help people live longer, protect against certain cancers, improve mental health, and enhance heart health.
Both red and white wines are relatively low in calories. A glass of white wine has 121calories compared to 125-130 calories for red wine.
Antioxidants, resveratrol, flavonoids and polyphenols are the compounds in wine that research- ers cite as the healthy chemicals in wine.
Vitamins contained in a glass of wine include:
• Red wine: 1-percent Vitamin K, 1-percent Thiamin, 2-percent Niacin, 3-percent Riboflavin and 4-percent Vitamin K.
• White wine: 3-percent magnesium, 3-percent Vitamin B6, 3-percent Vitamin B2 and 3-per- cent Niacin, 1-percent Riboflavin
Minerals in a glass of wine include:
• Red wine: 1-percent Calcium, 1-percent Copper, 1-percent Zinc, 3-percent Phosphorus, 4-percent Iron, 4-percent Magnesium, 5-per-
cent Potassium and 10-percent Manganese
• White wine: 3-percent Magnesium and trace amounts of calcium, iron, zinc, potassium and phosphorus
Red Wine is also a source of:
• Antioxidants helping prevent cancer, and heart disease and assist in lowering cholesterol. Red wine raises HDL (good cholesterol) levels.
• Flavonoids, or bioflavonoids, are a naturally found in plants and the fermentation process of making wine creates enzymes that help remove some carcinogens and pos- sibly inhibit the growth of tumors.
• Resveratrol is said to help prevent damage to blood vessels while reducing bad cholesterol and assisting to help prevent blood clots.
• Polyphenols helps coat and protect the important lining of the blood vessels in your heart.
