Paso Robles
The Paso Robles History Museum opens the Wine History Gallery
The Paso Robles History Muse- um is open! After being closed since March 2020 due to COV- ID-19 restrictions, the Paso Robles Historical Society, which operates the museum, announced a grand reopening in April and introduced the new Wine History Gallery.
The Wine History Gallery pres- ents a view of the early history of California, the history of California viticulture, and the development of vineyards and wineries in San Luis Obispo County. The exhibit in the gallery has been developed with
the assistance and resources of the Wine History Project of San Luis Obispo. The project works with local museums, galleries and winer- ies to preserve the history of two centuries of local viticulture and Central Coast winemaking though events and exhibits throughout the county.
The Gallery at the Paso Robles History Museum currently includes a retrospective of Tom Myers of Castoro Cellars. Myers is recognized as an expert on the science of wine-
making in San Luis Obispo County. As of 2020, he has filled over 200 million bottles with wine produced in the county.
Other current exhibits in the Wine History Gallery are “Cel- ebrating Zin,” an exploration of the Zinfandel grape and it’s influence on the San Luis Obispo County wine industry, and “Wine Becomes Art: Four Artists on the Central Coast.” The Wine Becomes Art exhibit features the art by four local artists that are featured on wine bottles. Several bottles designed by Candace Norcross for local wineries are on display. Norcross has combined over 25 years of graphic, textile and commercial art into her concept that anything can be reproduced
on glass.
The museum is packed with
exhibits of Paso’s history with docu- ments, photographs, and artifacts representing the full spectrum of the area’s past from the earliest inhabitants to current times. The Virginia Peterson Library, down- stairs from the museum, is the society’s research center dedicated to preserving a diverse collection of materials that document the unique history of Paso Robles and its sur- rounding area.
More exhibits in the museum include:
• “Bearcat Alley,” the history of schools in Paso Robles with year- books, photos, “Living Legends,” and memorabilia
• “Uncovering Buried Treasures,” a unique display of items discovered by the Hiner Group during their local metal detecting adventures
• Salinan Exhibit showcasing Salinan artifacts, courtesy of the Salinan Tribe
• History of Women’s Suffrage in the Paso Robles Area
• Exceptional Women of the Paso Robles Area
