Go fly a kite—soaring high at the Morro Bay Kite Festival
The Morro Bay Kite Festival has
been a Central Coast go-to
event since 2007. Starting Friday
night, April 25, the kite fun and
adventures continue all day on
Saturday and Sunday. There are
free kites for the first 500 children
on Saturday, two candy drops a
day, kite-making workshops, flying
contests, musically synchronized
kite-flying, professional kite-flying
demonstrations, vendor booths,
food, and more.
The festival started in Paso
Robles in 2006 when event director,
Shaun Farmer organized a group
of local kitefliers. The next year, he
brought the event to Morro Bay for
the favorable springtime winds. To-
day, the festival entertains around
3000 kitefliers and visitors.
Friday night kites
After sundown on Friday, the
night sky fills with LED-lighted kites,
launched by professional kitefliers.
Workshops,
contests,
demonstrations,
and more
The weaving and dancing lights set
the mood for the high-flying shapes
and colors over the weekend.
The professional kitefliers, many
known personally to Farmer, are
invited to fly the demonstration
kites and display their unique kites
and technical flying skills. The pros
participate in activities throughout
the weekend, flying and controlling
multiple-lined kites and performing
acrobatic, synchronized demonstra-
tions.
Professional kitefliers? Yep!
There is such a thing! Most are
members of the American Kitefliers
Association, which holds events,
and workshops to help kitefliers
develop the advanced skills needed
to reach professional status.
Personal non-professional
kites are welcome on Saturday and
Sunday! Experience some of the
best kite-flying wind in the world,
learn to make kites, pick up some
professional tips, or relax and enjoy
watching the kite-filled sky at this
free and fun family event.
The Morro Bay Kite Festival is
held near Morro Rock from Friday
night April 25, through April 26-27.
