–Popolo Catering, serving the catering needs of the Central Coast since 2006 under the guidance of Leon and Kat Castillo, recently announced the opening of a new facility in Santa Maria. “One of the many things we love about Santa Maria is the small-town feel we get living here. That is part of the reason why we established an office and warehouse in Santa Maria,” said Leon Castillo.
Castillo said the business has grown and expanded beyond the Central Coast. Acquiring the new facilities make it easier to serve customers in south Santa Barbara County and other nearby communities. The new warehouse makes it more efficient to get supplies and equipment to venues throughout Santa Barbara County. The new office is located at 1118 Kit Way, Santa Maria, CA 93455, (805) 543-9543.
Popolo Catering continues operations at its San Luis Obispo location and to bring its popular and high quality catering services and meals to customers throughout San Luis Obispo County.

Leon Castillo is a long time veteran of the food industry, starting his first job at 16 for a local, family-owned restaurant in Santa Maria. His interest in food and cooking grew from helping his stepfather barbeque for family dinners and for large events for family and friends. He steadily honed his interest and skills and starting in 1986 when he joined Elk’s Lodge #1538, Leon served as a volunteer crew leader for 17 years, spearheading the Elk’s catering services. Leon gained experience in preparing, serving and staging food for weddings, banquets and community functions for groups as large a 1000 guests. He was also a member of the Elk’s barbecue team preparing Santa Maria Style top sirloin and other meats such as the popular tri-tip for Elk’s events and organizing and managing the food concession operations for the traditional Elk’s Rodeo weekend.
In 2002, Leon started Lion Castle Catering, based in Santa Maria, building the business while holding down a full time job at Vandenberg Air Force Base. As a self-taught chef, Leon earned his education in business, marketing and culinary arts by learning invaluable lessons along the way and 2006 he expanded again, purchasing Popolo Rotisserie Café and Catering in San Luis Obispo.
Today, renamed as Popolo Catering, the company concentrates on catering weddings and events. With the dedicated and creative attention of Kat and Leon and their son, Kenny, the San Luis Obispo catering company has grown to become a leading catering service for communities in and near San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, successfully catering more than 15,000 events.
