Tuesday, August 1st, 2017

–Two whales spent Saturday afternoon feeding in San Simeon Bay. Crowds of spectators watched from the pier and took pictures. The whales spent several hours dining on schools of small fish in San Simeon Cove.

In the 1850’s, about Portuguese 20 families lived in a whaling village on the point of San Simeon. They harvested 20-22 whales a year.hu That ended about the time George Hearst bought Rancho de las Piedras Blancas in 1865, largely because petroleum made whale oil obsolete.
